San Miguel Electric Cooperative Highlighted by Texas Monthly for Endangered Species Conservation Efforts

“The black-lace cactus may not get the attention and awe of the bluebonnet, but it’s just as important to Texas.”

CHRISTINE, Texas [April 14, 2026] San Miguel Electric Cooperative, Inc. has been recognized by Texas Monthly for its role in supporting the conservation of the endangered black-lace cactus in South Texas. In an April 2026 feature, “The Mission to Save Thousands of Endangered Cacti From a Mining Site,” journalist Dina Gachman highlights a collaborative effort to identify, carefully remove, propagate and ultimately replant thousands of black-lace cacti discovered at a future mining site near Christine, Texas.

Following the discovery, San Miguel worked alongside partners that included the San Antonio Botanical Garden, the Native Plant Rescue Project, the San Antonio Cactus and Xerophyte Society and environmental consultant Jeremiah McKinney to relocate and preserve the species. SMECI’s Environmental & Fuels Manager Dave Burris and Permit Compliance Coordinator Nellie Frisbee played a critical role in leading and executing this conservation initiative.

“This recognition underscores the importance of collaboration and responsible stewardship,” said Jason Cowan, General Manager/CEO of SMECI. “We are proud to support efforts that protect Texas’ natural heritage while continuing to provide reliable, affordable power to the communities we serve.”

The feature highlights how cross-sector partnerships can advance conservation outcomes alongside ongoing energy operations, demonstrating a balanced approach to environmental responsibility in South Texas.
